Individual Therapy and Counseling in Northbrook

One person, one clinician, an hour a week. It is the most common thing we do and the least precisely described, so here is what it actually involves at the Northbrook office.

"Counseling" and "therapy" get used interchangeably and nobody agrees where the line sits. In practice, at this office, both words describe the same thing: regular one-to-one sessions with a licensed clinician, in a room where the subject is you and nothing has to be tidied up before it is said.

People arrive for an enormous range of reasons and a good number arrive without one they can name. Something has shifted and has not shifted back. A decision will not resolve. A pattern has shown up again in a third relationship or a third job. None of that needs to meet a threshold before it is worth an hour.

The Northbrook office is at 604 Academy Drive, a few minutes from downtown Northbrook and Northbrook Court, and the people who use it come from Northbrook itself, Glenview, Deerfield, Northfield, Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park and Wheeling.

What people come in with

How the work runs

The first session or two is mostly getting the picture: what is going on, how long it has been going on, what you have already tried, and what you would want to be different. It is also where you find out whether this clinician is someone you can work with, which matters more than the method does.

That is not a figure of speech. Across decades of psychotherapy research, the strength of the working relationship predicts outcome more reliably than the technique chosen. It is the reason our Intake Team matches on what you describe rather than on who has a free Thursday, and the reason we will tell you when the better-suited clinician has a two-week wait.

The approaches themselves are the well-evidenced ones, chosen for the person rather than applied as a house style: CBT, which eleven of our clinicians work in, DBT skills where feelings outrun the capacity to handle them, psychodynamic and insight-oriented work where the pattern is long-standing, and motivational interviewing where the question is really about change rather than distress.

Sessions are usually weekly to begin with and typically run fifty minutes. How long the whole thing lasts varies far too much to promise — some people come for eight sessions with a specific problem, others for a year.

Getting to the Northbrook office

604 Academy Drive, a few minutes from downtown Northbrook and close to Northbrook Court and the Willow Festival shopping centre. There is a car park on site and no charge for it.

We are minutes from the Edens Expressway, which is what most people coming from Glenview, Deerfield or Wilmette use. Early-morning and evening appointments exist and fill first, so say what you need when you call rather than taking the first slot offered.

Telehealth runs anywhere in Illinois, and a good number of people alternate — in person when they can, remote on the weeks the commute would be the reason to cancel.

Common questions

Nothing, at this practice. Both describe regular one-to-one sessions with a licensed clinician. Elsewhere the words sometimes signal shorter and more practical versus longer and more exploratory, but there is no agreed definition and we do not use them to mean different things.

You do not have to. Every clinician has a page with their credential, training and the approaches they use, so you can read first if you would rather. If you have no preference, describe the situation when you call and our Intake Team will match on that.

Genuinely varies, and anyone who answers that confidently before meeting you is guessing. Some people come for eight sessions about one specific thing. Others stay a year. What we can say is that the first two or three are about getting the problem right, which is the part that determines whether the rest helps.
