Counseling and Individual Therapy in Libertyville

Weekly one-to-one sessions with a licensed clinician, at Hawthorn Health Center on Hollister Drive, for people across Lake County.

The hardest part is usually the first call, and the thing that makes it hard is not knowing whether what you are dealing with counts. People ring apologising for taking up a slot somebody else needs more. There is no bar to clear. If something has been sitting on you long enough that you have thought about calling, that is the whole qualification.

Lake County is spread out, and that changes how people use this office. The catchment runs from Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove in the south to Gurnee, Zion and Fox Lake in the north, and a good number of people are driving twenty or thirty minutes each way. We plan around that rather than pretending it is not a factor — it is the single most common reason a course of therapy quietly stops.

Which is why the first conversation covers logistics as well as the problem. The right clinician at an impossible time of day is the wrong clinician.

Reasons people start

What to expect

Sessions are typically fifty minutes and usually weekly at the start, moving to fortnightly when that makes sense. The early appointments are about building an accurate picture rather than starting treatment fast — anxiety, low mood, grief and burnout overlap heavily in how they present and do not respond to the same work.

The approaches are chosen for the person. CBT where anxious prediction and avoidance are running things, and eleven of our clinicians work in it. DBT skills where the difficulty is that emotions arrive faster than they can be handled. Psychodynamic and insight-oriented work where the pattern is long-standing and has outlived whatever created it. Motivational interviewing where the real question is about changing something rather than enduring it.

Nobody here prescribes. Where medication is worth considering we say so and coordinate with your physician rather than leaving you to connect the two.

If at any point it becomes clear that a different clinician here is the better fit — for couples work, for testing, for a specialism — that transfer happens inside the practice rather than sending you back to the start somewhere else.

Finding us in Libertyville

Suite 201, Hawthorn Health Center, 1800 Hollister Drive. Parking is directly outside. The building holds several medical practices, so give the suite number at the desk.

The Libertyville Metra station is a short drive, which matters for people who commute into the city and for older teenagers travelling on their own. Cook Park and the Libertyville Sports Complex are the usual landmarks people navigate by.

Telehealth runs anywhere in Illinois. Across a county this size it is less a convenience than the reason a course of therapy survives January.

Common questions

Not here. Both mean regular one-to-one sessions with a licensed clinician. The words are used interchangeably across the profession with no agreed distinction, and we do not use them to signal different things.

Regularly from Mundelein, Vernon Hills, Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake Forest, Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove, and from further north in the county. Where the drive is the obstacle rather than the appointment, alternating in-person and telehealth is common and works well.

Yes. Every clinician has a page with their credential, training and approaches, so you can read before you decide. If you would rather not, describe the situation when you call and our Intake Team matches on that rather than on who is free soonest.

Yes, Medicare and Medicare Advantage, which a number of practices in Lake County do not. We are also in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Aetna, Evernorth (Cigna), UnitedHealthcare, BCBS Community Medicaid and Oscar.
